Is Windows Defender enough or should I get a paid antivirus?

I’m getting a new laptop and I want to make sure everything goes well.

On my current laptop I only use windows defender and it works well, but I find myself scanning very often and twice it has let minor viruses slip by which I then had to scan for manually and delete.

I found a good deal on Norton 360 Standard and I’m wondering if that would be worth it. My friend recommended malwarebytes but I haven’t heard much about it. I want one that doesn’t impact performance too much while still providing good consistent protection.

Any recommendations or should I just stick with windows defender? Speed and startup time are important for me, but security is top priority.
