How Do I Know What to Trust?

I use VirusTotal a lot and scan almost everything I download because I’m extremely paranoid about malware. A lot of the time the things I scan will come up under “Safe” or “Undetected”, which is fine. But then sometimes I have files that are around 90% but then get 3 or fewer detections saying that they contain malware. How can I know for sure when something a false positive or when it’s something that’s clearly something I should avoid if I get mixed reviews?
